Mercedes-AMG has revealed its new GT SUV, an electric model with up to 1,153 horsepower, ultra-fast charging, and advanced chassis technology.
It shows how the German performance brand is answering rivals from China, where carmakers are quickly raising the bar on electric output, charging speed, and software.

On October 17, Mercedes-AMG unveiled the AMG GT SUV. It is the brand’s first full-size SUV developed in-house from the ground up. The car sits on the AMG.EA high-performance electric architecture, and the flagship version uses three axial-flux motors.
The range includes the GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63. The top version is aimed at buyers who want supercar performance in an SUV.

This launch matters because premium European brands can no longer rely on their badge and driving heritage. Chinese EV makers like BYD and Geely have pushed charging speed and onboard technology forward. Established manufacturers now have to offer more than fast acceleration to stay competitive.
AMG Power and Charging Tech
The range-topping AMG GT 63 SUV makes up to 1,153 horsepower from three electric motors. Mercedes-AMG says it can also deliver up to 711 horsepower continuously. That addresses a common weakness in performance EVs, which often give a short burst of power on launch but struggle to hold it during hard driving.
The SUV uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and a battery system influenced by Formula 1 technology. It supports charging power of up to 710kW with compatible equipment. Mercedes says that it can add 450 kilometers of range in about 10 minutes under suitable conditions.

Charging speed matters because Chinese manufacturers are pushing hard on it. Geely has shown a system it says can go from 10 to 70 percent in 4.5 minutes, and BYD has revealed megawatt-level charging technology.
Real-world charging depends on the charger, battery temperature, and other conditions. Still, AMG’s figures suggest Mercedes is working to close the gap.
Can Mercedes match the pace of China’s EV technology push?
Power and fast charging are only part of what the AMG GT SUV offers. It also has active suspension, rear-axle steering, and advanced aerodynamics, all tuned to balance sharp handling with a comfortable ride.
Mercedes keeps the AMG character alive with recorded engine sounds and simulated gear changes. Both aim to make driving an EV feel more engaging.

Rivals are pressing from several sides. BYD says its newest system can charge a car from 10% to 70% in about five minutes.
Geely’s Smart Charging technology goes further and targets 4.5 minutes. Zeekr, a premium EV brand, is one of the names tied to that battery system. Xiaomi is also in the fight, bringing its software strength and performance-minded EVs to a market that established carmakers have long controlled.
That changes what Mercedes-AMG has to prove. Quick acceleration is no longer enough. Charging speed, battery performance, and the in-car digital experience now define a premium electric vehicle, and the brand has to compete on all of them.
Chinese EV makers also compete on the full ownership experience. That covers software, driver assistance, charging networks, and pricing. The AMG GT SUV targets the premium performance segment, so it will not answer every challenge facing European carmakers.
Mercedes has not announced final pricing. The GT SUV should reach the U.S. next summer. That gives the brand time to show that its technology can keep pace with the fastest electric rivals.
