BMW has revealed the iX4, and its sloped coupe-SUV shape will grab the first look. The specs deserve more attention. The iX4 50 xDrive has a preliminary EPA range of up to 428 miles. It uses a 112.2 kWh usable battery and two electric motors that together make 463 horsepower.

BMW says it goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The iX4 is a redesign of the brand’s X4, the same approach BMW took with the iX5.

10 minutes of charging gets you up to 184 miles

BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. At a charger that powerful, the iX4 50 xDrive can add up to 184 miles of range in 10 minutes. A charge from 10 to 80 percent takes 21 minutes.

The iX4 shares its core hardware with the iX3 and i3 before it. It runs on an 800V electrical system and uses cylindrical battery cells packed directly into the battery pack, a design known as cell-to-pack. BMW says these new cells hold 20 percent more energy in the same volume than the prismatic cells in its previous generation.

Power can also flow out of the car. BMW confirms bidirectional charging with optional Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home hardware. You can run external devices from the battery, and it may keep your home powered during an outage.

The BMW M60

The iX4 50 xDrive is only the first model. BMW will follow it with the iX4 M60 xDrive. Its two motors make 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, and the US version goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

Inside, the iX4 uses BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system with a 17.9-inch central display. A 3D head-up display is available as an option. The voice assistant is smarter too, and it now runs with Amazon Alexa+.

Highway Assistant can drive hands-free at speeds up to 85 mph, as long as you stay attentive.

The iX4 50 xDrive starts at $66,200 before destination and handling fees. It launches in March 2027. The M60 arrives later.
