BYD Denza B8 Drives Off With a Wheel Clamp: How It Works

A parking clamp exists to keep a car from going anywhere. This BYD SUV apparently never got the message. A video circulating on Chinese social media seems to show a BYD Denza B8 driving along a public road with its front-left wheel lifted off the ground and a yellow-and-red metal clamp still attached.

The SUV keeps moving on its other three wheels. It looks less like parking enforcement and more like an unexpected superpower on display.

The video is unverified, and nobody knows the circumstances behind it. There is a possible technical explanation for the odd behavior, though. BYD’s advanced hydraulic suspension system can control each corner of the SUV independently.

BYD’s Suspension Lets the SUV Lift Wheels Individually

The Denza B8, sold in China as the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, uses BYD’s DiSus-P Ultra hydraulic suspension. Conventional suspension only manages body movement and ride comfort. This system can raise and lower each wheel on its own.

BYD first launched this technology in 2023 on the hugely popular Yangwang U9. That car used a different version called DiSus-X, the top-spec system. The B8 uses DiSus-P Ultra, which offers full single-wheel control and active obstacle recovery.

BYD says the system can lift a wheel by up to 300 millimeters and handle up to nine metric tons. The SUV has been seen driving on three wheels at up to 15km/h before. The company has also shown how lifting one wheel lets you change a tyre without a traditional jack.

That makes the viral footage more interesting. If the clip shows the SUV using this function, the lifted wheel could explain how it kept moving with the clamp still attached. The video does not show how the maneuver was done or why the clamp was fitted.

BYD Denza B8 Conventional Suspension and Safety & Legal Concerns

The Denza B8 is a plug-in hybrid SUV. It pairs a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric powertrain. The Flash Charge Edition has a 46.7kWh battery and can travel up to 75 miles on a charge under China’s CLTC test cycle.

BYD designed the suspension for real-world jobs like off-road driving, stability, and tyre maintenance. Using it to move a vehicle with a wheel clamp attached is a very different matter.

Nobody has confirmed an official response. The footage does not show whether the driver was trying to avoid a parking ticket. It also does not prove that the SUV can legally or safely drive away from a clamping operation.

Still, the clip is a memorable example of how advanced engineering can produce surprising results. A feature meant to improve suspension control may have ended up in a situation its engineers never planned for.
