It looks like Samsung might finally move past the main camera hardware it’s been reusing on standard Galaxy S phones since the Galaxy S22. According to GalaxyClub, some Galaxy S27 and S27+ prototypes are currently being tested with a new 50MP Sony sensor for the primary camera.
That would mark a real break from how Samsung usually operates, given the company’s long-standing preference for its own ISOCELL sensors in the main cameras of its Galaxy S lineup. The resolution stays the same at 50MP, but the sensor itself would be coming from an outside supplier for once.
Galaxy S27 May Ditch ISOCELL: What Will Replace It?
The Galaxy S27 and S27+ are still expected to stick with a 50MP main camera, but the megapixel count doesn’t tell the whole story. A newer Sony sensor could pull in more light, widen the dynamic range, cut down on noise, and hand Samsung’s image processing better raw material to work from in the first place.

To be fair, Samsung has managed to push photo quality forward over the past several generations through software improvements, newer chips, and more advanced computational photography tricks.
But there’s only so far processing alone can take you when the sensor underneath barely changes year over year. That’s why a new main sensor would be a genuinely welcome upgrade, especially given an earlier report suggesting the standard Galaxy S27 might just reuse the same camera hardware yet again.
None of this is locked in yet, though. There’s no guarantee the Sony sensor actually ships in the final phones, and the S27 series is still early enough in development that these plans could easily shift before launch.
Galaxy S27 May Ditch ISOCELL: What about the other cameras?
While the main camera looks set for a change, the ultrawide isn’t getting nearly as much love. GalaxyClub reports that the Galaxy S27 and S27+ will likely hold onto the same 12MP ultrawide sensor. It seems Samsung is holding the bigger camera upgrades back for its pricier models. Earlier reports point to the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra getting 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras, plus a new 16MP selfie camera.

If all this pans out, the standard Galaxy S27 models would get a genuinely better main camera while everything else stays pretty much where it’s always been.
I’ll believe the Sony sensor switch when Samsung actually confirms it, but even as a rumor, it’s a more promising sign than sitting through another year of the same sensor all over again.
