Apple’s Ultra watches have always been a niche product, built for people who push their gear outdoors rather than sit at a desk all day. The Ultra 3 doesn’t change that focus at all. If you spend your weekends hiking, swimming in open water, or chasing personal records on long runs, this watch was made with you in mind.
This is the third version of the Ultra, and it now sits at the top of Apple’s watch lineup, above the Series 11 and the Watch SE 3. It costs more than either of those, and it’s built tougher too. Apple designed it for people who need a device that can handle multiple days outdoors without a charger, yet still looks fine on your wrist during a work meeting.
The case size and titanium body carry over from the Ultra 2 without much change. What’s new this time is a bigger screen with better viewing angles from the side, satellite SOS calling for emergencies, 5G connectivity, and a battery that lasts longer while also charging faster than before. I wore the Ultra 3 every day for months as my main watch to find out if Apple’s most expensive smartwatch actually delivers enough to justify the price tag.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 Design and Screen
One look and you know exactly what you’re holding: an Apple Watch Ultra, nothing else. The titanium case stays at 49mm, same as the last two versions, and you still only get the one size. So if the original Ultra or the Ultra 2 felt too big on your wrist, nothing here will change your mind.
Color choices haven’t moved either. You can choose between Natural and Black, with Black being the shade Apple added back with the Ultra 2 in 2024.

Make no mistake, this is a large watch. Put it next to a Series 11, and you feel the size gap right away once it’s on your wrist. It weighs around 62 grams, close to double what the smallest Series 11 weighs.

Even so, I never found it uncomfortable, whether I wore it through the day, overnight, or during sleep tracking. My wrists are on the smaller side, and within a week the extra weight just stopped registering.
Like the earlier Ultra models, the Digital Crown here has deeper ridges, and both the crown and side button sit behind a raised guard. That design choice pays off when your hands are cold, wet, or gloved, since it’s far easier to grip and turn than on the Series 11.
Apple also shrank the bezels around the display this time, which opens up more screen space without making the case itself any bigger. The result is a genuinely great display, one that reads clearly in bright sunlight and holds up well even when you’re looking at it from an angle.
Apple says the sapphire crystal on top is its toughest yet, and after months of gym visits, dog walks, and the usual daily bumps, mine hasn’t picked up a mark.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 Performance and Software
The chip inside the Ultra 3 is the same S10 you will find in the Series 11, so don’t expect a processing boost just because you’re paying more. That said, the watch feels quick in everyday use. Apps launch fast, watch faces switch without delay, and Siri handles on-device requests without any lag.

On the software side, it ships with watchOS 26. That means you get the layered, see-through Liquid Glass design across menus and widgets, plus the Double Tap and Wrist Flick gestures for handling calls and notifications with one hand.

Both gestures work well here, and honestly they might matter more on this watch than on the Series 11, since you’re more likely to have full hands on a trail or in the middle of a gym set.
The Ultra 3 will also pick up watchOS 27 when Apple releases it later this year. That update brings Siri AI, a one-tap gesture for scrolling the Smart Stack one-handed, and a dynamic app grid that shows your most-used apps when you press the Digital Crown.
Just like the Ultra 2, this watch has an extra button that the standard models don’t get. You still have the Digital Crown and the side button, which opens Control Center with one press and Apple Wallet with two. But on the opposite edge sits the orange Action Button.
Set it to launch a workout, run a shortcut, or drop a compass waypoint with a quick press. Hold it down instead, and it triggers the built-in siren, pulls up your medical ID, or starts an emergency call. Any one of those could matter a lot in a real situation.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 Tracking and Features
Fitness tracking is the whole point of the Ultra 3, and for the most part, it does the job well. During gym sessions, I checked its heart rate numbers against a chest strap, and they lined up almost perfectly, right down to matching the same peak during hard intervals.
I also handed the watch to marathon runner Kieran Alger for a full 26.2-mile race. The GPS track wasn’t exactly on top of the official course, but the total mileage it logged stayed close enough that it didn’t throw off pacing or splits.

You also get Sleep Score, same as on other Apple Watch models. It splits your night into duration, consistency, and disturbances, then gives you a number out of 100. But the scoring runs just as generously here as it does on the Series 11, which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

My results on the Ultra 3 sat in the mid-90s most nights, well above what my Oura Ring and Eight Sleep system reported for those same nights, usually somewhere in the high 80s to low 90s. I would like Apple to add some form of daily readiness or stress score at some point, since competitors already offer that. For now, though, the Ultra 3 doesn’t have it.
This is where the Ultra 3 pulls ahead of the Series 11, in the moments you hope never happen but need to be ready for anyway. On top of 5G, which lets the watch work on its own without an iPhone nearby if you’ve got a data plan, you get Emergency SOS via satellite. That means you can still reach help even in spots with zero cell signal.
I only tested this through the built-in demo mode, not a real emergency, but knowing the feature exists gives you real peace of mind.
It sits alongside a 100-meter water resistance rating and certification for recreational diving down to 40 meters.
There are also hypertension notifications, which look at your heart rate patterns over a rolling 30-day window to flag possible signs of chronic high blood pressure. Worth noting, though, that feature isn’t unique to the Ultra 3. You’ll find it on the Ultra 2 and on the Series 9 through Series 11 as well.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 Battery Life
Battery life is a big reason to justify the extra cost of the Ultra 3, maybe the biggest one. Apple says you’ll get up to 42 hours from a charge under normal use, or up to 72 hours if you switch on Low Power Mode.
That tracks with what I saw on days that included at least one GPS-tracked workout. I ended up charging every other day instead of every night. A one-hour run cost about 8% of the battery, and when Kieran ran his marathon, a 2-hour, 54-minute effort, it used 18%.

You still won’t get the multi-day stamina that a Garmin or Coros watch offers. But it beats the Series 11 easily, and the fast charging makes the shorter battery life easier to live with. Plug it in for 45 minutes and you’re back up to 80%. If you’re really pressed for time, even 15 minutes on the charger gives you enough for about half a day.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 Verdict
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 stands as the most well-rounded smartwatch Apple has ever made. It combines the largest, brightest screen the Ultra line has seen with genuinely useful safety tools like Emergency SOS via satellite.
Yes, you’ll pay a lot more than you would for a Series 11, and if you already own an Ultra 2, there’s not enough new here to make upgrading worth it. But if you’re coming from an older Apple Watch, or leaving another smartwatch brand behind entirely, this is a watch that delivers on nearly every front.
Pros |
Cons |
| Big and bright display | Expensive |
| Good and comfortable titanium build with longer battery life plus fast charging | Limited changes over the Watch Ultra 2 |
| Emergency SOS via Satellite adds peace of mind when off-grid and dependable fitness and GPS tracking | No stress tracking or daily readiness score, and there is only one size option |
Final Thoughts
Three versions in, Apple hasn’t reinvented the Ultra formula, but the Ultra 3 still moves things forward in ways that matter. You get a bigger, brighter screen, satellite SOS that could genuinely save you in a bad spot, and battery life that finally starts closing the gap with dedicated outdoor watches.
None of this comes cheap, and if you already own an Ultra 2, there’s little reason to spend money on this one.
For everyone else, though, whether you’re moving up from a standard Apple Watch, switching over from Android, or you just want the most capable watch Apple sells, the Ultra 3 is hard to argue with.
It’s built to handle real adventure, yet it still fits into a normal work week without feeling out of place. That balance is what makes it stand out.
