MSI Unveils World’s First Inkjet-Printed OLED Monitor

MSI just gave us a real look at where OLED monitors are headed next. Working with TCL CSOT, the company unveiled the first 27-inch 4K monitor running at 120Hz that uses inkjet-printed OLED technology. This manufacturing method used to stay locked in prototypes and specialty displays. Now it’s moving toward regular buyers.

The monitor is called the MSI Pro Max OLED 271UPJW12. It runs on a TCL CSOT panel made by printing organic light-emitting material straight onto the display. This process cuts down on wasted material compared to standard OLED manufacturing. Over time, it could make panels cheaper to produce and easier to scale up.

Why MSI Pro Max OLED Could make a difference

Standard OLED panels come from a costly process, one that relies on vacuum equipment and precise metal masks. Inkjet printing works differently. It lays down the organic material in controlled patterns, similar to how a regular printer places ink on a page.

TCL has shown off prototypes using this method for years, but actual products are finally hitting the market. Lenovo just introduced the first laptop with a 240Hz inkjet-printed OLED screen, and word is that TCL CSOT has begun small-scale production of 27-inch 4K panels.

Earlier projections pointed to production costs dropping by roughly 20%. Whether that turns into real savings for buyers depends on a few things: how good the manufacturing yields are, how much production scales up, how strong demand ends up being, and how manufacturers choose to price this first generation of products.

World’s First Inkjet-Printed OLED Monitor Features

Here’s what MSI packed into the display itself. You get 3840 x 2160 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a vertical RGB stripe pixel layout. That subpixel design is the same one people are used to, and it should sharpen text while cutting down on the color fringing you sometimes see around letters on OLED screens.

Brightness hits a claimed 1,000 nits at peak for HDR, and the panel covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color space. It also carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. At 27 inches, the screen works out to 164 pixels per inch.

MSI built in an OLED protection system too. It runs panel compensation quietly in the background, so you won’t notice it interrupting your work. Beyond that, the monitor comes with a KVM switch, picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture modes, USB-C with 15W charging, and a stand you can fully adjust.

No word yet on price or release date. Early units will likely carry a high price tag, since cheaper manufacturing doesn’t automatically translate to cheaper shelf prices. Still, if production ramps up over time, it could open the door to OLED monitors that cost less and perform just as well.
