GTA 6 pre-orders went live recently, and while fans were excited, one detail soured the mood fast. The physical edition everyone pre-ordered doesn’t actually come with a disc.
Instead, you get a box with cover art and a download code tucked inside, which is basically just a fancier digital purchase.
That choice didn’t sit well with people online, especially collectors who still value owning their games on a physical disc.
For a while, there was a glimmer of hope that this was just a temporary situation. Some reports pointed to Rockstar possibly releasing an actual disc version of GTA 6 in December 2026, giving disc collectors something to look forward to.

GTA 6 Physical Edition Disc Release
That hope is looking a lot weaker now. The Hollywood Reporter put out a new report saying Rockstar has no plans to actually print discs for GTA 6, not at launch, and not later down the line either.
The mix-up seems to have come from the phrase “physical copy” getting tossed around, which apparently just means the code-in-a-box version that’s already been announced, not an actual disc you can hold.

This is a tough pill for collectors to swallow. GTA 6 isn’t some yearly release people will forget about by next month.
It’s one of the most anticipated games ever made, landing after more than a decade of waiting since GTA 5. For a lot of fans, having a real boxed disc copy of a game this big would have meant something, the kind of item you’d actually want sitting on a shelf.
So instead, anyone paying $80 to $100 ends up with a plastic case that has nice artwork, but where the Blu-ray disc should be, there’s just a code sitting in its place. That stings even more given how much cultural weight this game carries.
GTA 6 Physical Edition Rockstar
Some fans have tried to make sense of this by pointing out that skipping discs could help Rockstar cut down on leaks and limit resale before launch. That logic tracks, especially for a game getting this much attention. But understanding the reasoning doesn’t make it sting any less for players who actually care about owning their games on physical media.

It’s not like Rockstar needs the money either. Unconfirmed reports claim GTA 6 has already racked up 39 million pre-orders and roughly $3 billion in revenue before it’s even out.
Even taking those numbers with a grain of salt, it’s clear this game is heading toward one of the biggest commercial launches in gaming history.
A code stuffed in a case might satisfy retailers and the people counting profits, but it’s not going to sit well with collectors. For a game with this much hype behind it, plenty of fans wanted something more lasting than a slip of paper telling them to go download it.
