The second-generation iPhone Air is starting to come into focus, and based on the latest supply chain report, Apple isn’t just giving it a spec bump. It looks like the company is fine-tuning what already made the first iPhone Air stand out.

Analyst Jeff Pu says the iPhone Air 2, expected sometime in early 2027, will keep its thin design while adding a smaller Dynamic Island, an upgraded camera setup, and Apple’s next chip.

Unlike the Pro lineup, which usually chases attention-grabbing camera upgrades or new materials, the Air series seems to be improving through smaller, careful changes. None of these rumored updates are huge on their own, but put together, they suggest Apple is working to fix some of the bigger trade-offs from the first model.

Per Pu, the iPhone Air 2 keeps the same 6.55-inch display as the first model, but Apple is reportedly shrinking the Dynamic Island. That might sound minor on paper, but a smaller cutout means more usable screen space and a cleaner-looking display during everyday use.

The camera setup could see one of the bigger upgrades in the Air line so far. Pu says the phone keeps the existing 48-megapixel main camera but adds a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, giving the Air a much more capable camera system than what the first-generation model offered. That change would close one of the biggest gaps between Apple’s premium phones and the more affordable ones.

On the inside, Apple is expected to move to the A20 Pro chip, reportedly built using TSMC’s 2nm process along with Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging. That approach places memory physically closer to the processor, which could boost both performance and power efficiency without making the chip any bigger.

The report also mentions 12GB of RAM, a titanium frame, and Apple’s newer C2 modem, replacing the C1X modem used in the original Air.

None of these upgrades sound dramatic on their own, and that’s likely intentional. The first iPhone Air carved out its own space as the option for people who wanted something thinner and lighter than a Pro model, without giving up flagship performance.

If these reports hold up, Apple isn’t trying to reinvent that idea with the second version. It’s strengthening it instead, by fixing the small, everyday annoyances people actually notice, whether that’s a bit more usable screen space, better ultra-wide photos, or more efficient performance from newer chip tech.

The timing lines up with Apple’s broader plans too. Pu expects the iPhone Air 2 to launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 sometime in the first quarter of 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone are expected to arrive months before that.

As always, none of this is official yet, and it’s all coming from supply chain sources rather than Apple itself. But if the company really is focused on refining the Air rather than reinventing it, the iPhone Air 2 could end up being a good example of something Apple tends to do well: taking something familiar and making it noticeably better through a handful of smart, incremental changes.
