Discord’s age-verification system is finally rolling out again after months of delays and pushback from users, but this version looks different. Most people won’t need to upload an ID or scan their face at all.
This week, Discord starts rolling out a new age-estimation system that sorts accounts automatically into an Adult Age Group, a Teen Age Group, or leaves them Unconfirmed when there isn’t enough information to make a call either way. Discord expects more than 90% of users to skip manual age confirmation entirely under this system.
How does Discord detect if you are an adult?
Discord bases its estimate on patterns in how an account behaves. That includes how old the account is, which servers and communities someone belongs to, connected games, and general activity levels.
Discord says it doesn’t analyze messages, voice calls, or actual conversation content for this. No single server or community gets to decide someone’s age group either; it’s based on the account as a whole.

If your account lands in the adult group, nothing changes for you. Teen accounts, meaning anyone between 13 and 17, get extra safeguards around who can message them, what content they can see, and what shows up on their profile to others.
Messages from strangers get routed into Message Requests instead of landing directly; sensitive images may get blurred or blocked outright, and age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands stay off-limits. Regular DMs, voice calls, and servers without age restrictions keep working exactly like before.
What to do if Discord gets your age wrong
Discord acknowledges upfront that this model won’t be perfect. If you’re an adult who gets placed in the wrong group, or your account ends up Unconfirmed, you can head to User Settings, then Account Status, and manually verify your age from there.

Compared to the original plan, this rollout offers more verification methods, and several don’t require a selfie or government ID at all. Depending on where you live and what device you’re using, you might be able to confirm your age through a credit card, AgeKey, Google Wallet, or age data already shared through Apple or Google.
Discord originally aimed for a wider rollout earlier this year but pulled back after facing criticism over face scans, ID checks, and third-party verification companies handling the process.
Now, facial age estimation has to happen entirely on-device, and Discord says any verification vendor involved must delete submitted data once it determines an age group. The new system is rolling out gradually throughout this week, so don’t be surprised if it takes a few days to show up on your account.
