Qualcomm just revealed the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, its newest audio chip built for earbuds, headphones, and other wearables. The announcement came at Snapdragon Summit 2026, alongside the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 mobile processors.
This new platform doubles the AI capability of its predecessor, adds direct cloud access through micro-power Wi-Fi 6E, and introduces a set of features centered around always-on AI assistants.
Qualcomm also claims the platform runs on up to 40% less power while taking up 30% less physical space compared to the Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform. Given that these chips end up inside tiny products like earbuds, those efficiency gains actually matter quite a bit.
Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 Brings AI to Earbuds
Qualcomm sees wearables becoming the next frontier for how people interact with Personal AI. According to the company’s own research, up to 70% of users want more advanced AI features integrated into their wearables, things like real-time translation, contextual assistance, personalized hearing adjustments, and other voice-driven experiences.

To deliver those features without constantly bouncing requests back to your phone, Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 adds micro-power Wi-Fi 6E support. Compatible earbuds can connect straight to cloud services, giving Snapdragon Sound Apps and Agents access to AI assistants, translation tools, content, and other online services, all while using far less power than a standard Wi-Fi connection would require.
Qualcomm is also weaving Sound Elite Gen 2 into its broader Personal AI push across Snapdragon devices. On phones running its latest mobile chips, the company has already shown off a Personal Scribe system capable of learning from your messages, emails, and conversations to build a private knowledge graph tailored to you.
Earbuds fit into that picture as another way to reach your assistant, this time by voice, with cloud access handling anything that doesn’t need to stay tied to your phone. Qualcomm hasn’t detailed exactly how that personal context moves between devices yet.
AI is used to improve the sound quality
This AI hardware isn’t just running voice assistants behind the scenes. Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 brings fifth-generation Qualcomm ANC, cVc voice processing, and support for advanced multi-microphone arrays that adjust noise cancellation, speech capture, and voice clarity based on who’s listening and what’s happening around them.

Familiar Snapdragon Sound features carry over too, including aptX Lossless for higher-quality wireless audio and XPAN, which routes audio over Wi-Fi whenever Bluetooth alone can’t keep up.
Sound Elite Gen 2 also supports earbuds with built-in cameras, giving AI systems both visual and audio input to better understand what’s happening around the wearer. Qualcomm hasn’t announced a timeline yet for when the first products using this chip will actually hit the market.
