GoPro has launched the Mission 1 series, its latest lineup of action cameras. The range includes two models at the top end, which are the Mission 1 Pro and the Mission 1 Pro ILS.
If you’re trying to decide between the two, the key question is what the ILS model actually adds and whether it’s worth the extra consideration over the standard Pro version.
We haven’t tested either camera yet, but we’ve gone through the specs of both in detail to pinpoint exactly what sets them apart. Here’s what we found.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro vs Pro ILS: Price and Availability
GoPro hasn’t announced pricing for either camera yet. More details are expected between April 19 and 22, and we’ll update this comparison as soon as those numbers go public.
On availability, the Mission 1 Pro opens for preorder on May 21, with the official launch set for May 28. The Mission 1 Pro ILS has a later release window, with GoPro confirming it will be available sometime in early Q3 2026.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro vs Pro ILS: 50MP sensor and GP3 processor
Both cameras share the same core hardware, so let’s start there. The Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 Pro ILS both use a 50MP one-inch sensor paired with GoPro’s GP3 processor. These are also the same specs found in the base Mission 1 model.

The one-inch sensor brings a larger surface area to the table, with native 1.6µm pixels and 3.2µm fused pixels. GoPro says this combination allows both cameras to pull in more light in low-light and difficult shooting conditions.
The GP3 processor, built on a 5nm chip, is designed to deliver what GoPro describes as category-leading battery life and thermal performance across the Mission 1 lineup.
Both cameras also include an AI Neural Processor Unit, which GoPro says handles next-generation video pixel processing and improves image quality in low-light conditions.
Whether these claims hold up in real-world use is something we’ll need to verify once we get both cameras in hand. Based on the specs alone, though, the Mission 1 series looks like a strong step forward for GoPro.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS is mirrorless
One of the biggest differences between the two cameras is that the Mission 1 Pro ILS is mirrorless. In practical terms, this means it uses an electronic viewfinder to display images digitally instead of relying on a mirror to reflect the image through an optical viewfinder.

The ILS model also features an interchangeable lens mount that supports Micro Four Thirds lenses and adapters. GoPro says this opens up a virtually limitless range of compatible lenses for the camera.
If lens flexibility and creative control matter to you, the ILS is the clear choice between the two. The standard Mission 1 Pro doesn’t offer that level of versatility.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS Stabilization
GoPro introduces HyperSmooth, the stabilization technology. The GoPro’s in-camera stabilization technology, first introduced on the Hero 7 Black, is included on the Mission 1 Pro ILS. The feature works by cropping a small portion of the frame edges to reduce camera shake, keeping your footage smooth and steady rather than shaky or jittery.
GoPro also notes that HyperSmooth on the ILS is compatible with any rectilinear, prime focal length lens, which adds another layer of flexibility when shooting with different glass.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro Water Resistant
The Mission 1 Pro handles water resistance well on its own, rated to 20m (66 feet) without any additional protection. Add the optional housing, sold separately, and that rating jumps to 60m (196 feet). The case also includes built-in mounting fingers, letting you shoot in both horizontal and vertical orientations.

The Mission 1 Pro ILS is a different story. GoPro describes it as weatherproof but hasn’t provided any specific details on what that covers. It may not match the water resistance of the standard Pro without a case, but until GoPro clarifies the specs, it’s hard to say exactly where the ILS stands on this front.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro vs Pro ILS Verdict
GoPro positions the Mission 1 series as the world’s smallest, lightest, and most rugged 8K and 4K Open Gate cinema cameras. It’s one of the more notable camera launches this year, though real-world performance is something we’ll need to confirm through hands-on testing.

At this stage, the Mission 1 Pro ILS suits anyone who wants the freedom to swap lenses and adapt to different shooting situations.
The Mission 1 Pro, on the other hand, is a strong pick for those who want a compact, capable action camera that covers most everyday shooting needs without the added complexity.
